The firm is primarily focused on three leading basins of the United States - the Williston, Permian and the Appalachian. Northern employs a unique strategy wherein it owns non-operating, minority interests in oil and gas wells, which are majority-owned and operated by some leading producers. As part of this low-cost model, the company does not drill any well but essentially provides financing for its acreage. The Williston Basin in North Dakota and Montana is the company's core operating region.
